Awakening the Remnant

Isn't there a literal awesomeness in watching prophecy come to pass?...How, sometimes, you can't imagine what a certain passage of scripture could portend until suddenly it becomes all too clear and happens all too fast. That's how I've felt about multiple references to "a remnant of the house of Jacob" who is foreseen to "go forth among [the Gentiles]" in the last days; and would "be in the midst of them who shall be many; and...shall be among them as a lion among the beasts of the forest, and as a young lion among the flocks of sheep, who, if he goeth through both treadeth down and teareth in pieces." (3 Nephi 20:16; 3 Nephi 21:12, Micah 5:8).

I used to read about "the remnant" wreaking havoc among the Gentiles and be oh-so-glad I knew how to speak Spanish, being from Southern California and just knowing that Mexico was one day going to take it back. I don't discount that possibility but there's something else I didn't see coming -- and that's the growing agitation and organization of the Native American Indians.

Just recently I stumbled across, what claims to be, a summary of Joseph Smith's teachings about latter-day events pertaining to "the remnant" in an 1880 publication of the Millennial Star. The author  first speaks of the "war of Rebellion" and then says:

Another and more appalling condition awaits that ill-fated people [note that this is Englishman and apostle Albert Carrington referring to the people of the United States]...The populace will be divided into innumerable factions, and blood, carnage and woe will be rampant among them, filing the hearts of the more peacefully disposed with fear and dismay...Weakened and powerless from the internal broils and disturbances, the nation will become prey to the remnants left of the aboriginal inhabitants, who will be filled with vengeful rage at the wrongs that have been perpetrated upon them and furiously spread destruction in every direction.
— Millennial Star, vol. 42, pg. 586

Let it also be noted that, according to 3 Nephi 20:15, the condition for "the remnant" to be stirred up is: "if the Gentiles do not repent after the blessing which they shall receive, after they have scattered my people..."

The paragraph immediately following the one about becoming prey to the remnants left of the aboriginal inhabitants is a painfully accurate snapshot of our day:

All the affairs of men will be in continual and increasing commotion. The masses will be a prey to cunning and unscrupulous demagogues, and statesmen will perpetuate such egregious blunders, increasing the evils they aim to obliterate, that they will lose the confidence of the people, who will be swayed hither and thither with the agitations of the hour, as sheep without shepherds.

Nailed it! From statesmen increasing the evils they aim to obliterate to the people being swayed by the agitations of the hour, that is one mighty fine piece of prophecy. And how does it help common folk like you and me? Shouldn't it strengthen our resolve to repent, trust in the Lord and have confidence in His timetable? We may just have to watch as the progressive agenda of the right plus the arrogant extortion of the left (both unrighteous extremes) make all of this come true.

What say ye?
